Watch fork lightning carve through the North East sky as thunderstorms batter region

Lightning illuminated the sky as thunderstorms hit the North East on Sunday night.

The heavens opened as dark clouds rolled in, after the Met Office earlier extended its yellow weather warning.

Thunder and lightning was reported in many areas, including Newcastle , Gateshead , Northumberland , Wallsend and Consett.

And the dramatic strikes were caught on camera, as you can see above.

The storms followed what had been a largely pleasant day, with temperatures reaching highs of 23C in places.
