Watch flipping good fun as Durham Cathedral supporters help raise funds for its appeal

A unique challenge that saw families get their frying pans out this week has been raising fund - literally - to support Durham Cathedral.

The Durham landmark invited people to take part in a virtual Pancake Pilgrimage and they did not need much encouragement.

The flip-and-run event involved covering a distance of 995 steps while flipping a pancake in the air in the hope that collective efforts would make up the 7.7-mile journey from Chester le Street that was originally made by St Cuthbert's coffin to its final resting place at the cathedral.

It's now a popular pilgrimage route but in lockdown the cathedral came up with the idea of a virtual event between Shrove Tuesday and Friday, asking participants to run - or walk - their own distance and to share a video of the results to feature in a compilation video being made on the deadline day.

At the same time they were invited to raise sponsorship for their Pancake Pilgrimage to help the cathedral and the community to recover from the impact of Covid-19.

While the event didn't quite make the fund-raising target, it came close said the cathedral and its video clearly shows that everybody loved the attempt.

Anyone able to make a donation to Durham Cathedral's ongoing Just Giving appeal can do so here. The building is currently open 11am-2pm daily for private prayer and limited private worship. It is also offering online services
