A Michigan fisherman reeled in a steelhead with a wedding ring attached to it on Friday and now the anglers know the story behind the jewelry.
The group in the Pass the Passion tournament on Lake Michigan over the weekend pulled the fish up onto Jim Nelligan’s boat, who called the catch “crazy.”
Monday, the Chicago Sun-Times reported that the ring belonged to Capt. Jason Rose, who used a zip tie to attach his wedding band to the fish back on May 4. Rose explained that he was married nearly 10 years and has since been divorced for four years and that he wanted to get rid of the ring but did not want to pawn it or simply toss it in the lake.
Rose said his ex-wife always disliked his fishing (he’s a guide) and it felt like the right way to release the ring, adding that he believes the ring is bad luck. Nelligan agrees with Rose’s assessment that the ring is bad luck, saying he’s had nothing but problems with his boat since the ring came aboard.
