West Yorkshire Police were also called to the scene to close off the road, which was close to Leeds City College and to the Clarendon Wing of Leeds General Infirmary Hospital.

The fire is believed to have been started by an electrical fault in the basement of the building.

Engines from Killingbeck and Hunslet were called out, totalling seven units.

The fire was put out by about 10.30am.

Tom Staples, West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service station manager at Birkenshaw said: “It was reported at 8am on Sunday by a security guard.

“We had seven units plus support including pumps from Killingbeck and Hunslet.

“It was a fire in the basement and the cause is a suspected electrical fault.

“Damage to the basement and first floor. No-one has been hurt.”
