Watch: Fire burns jungle gym in new city centre park

A playground in a new city centre park was set alight in broad daylight yesterday

The jungle gym in Weaver Park appears to have been significantly damaged by the fire. It is unclear if the park will be closed for repairs.

Weaver Park is in the heart of the Liberties on Cork Street and was opened in 2017. The Liberties is known for a lack of green spaces and places for children to play and the park was welcomed by residents as a result.

The news of the fire was met with heavy criticism on social media. The Liberties Dublin twitter page said: "How appalling to see such wanton destruction of a local amenity.

"Such disdain for the wider community. Such disdain for the huge time and effort that went into creating this beautiful park."

Green Party TD for Dublin South Central Patrick Costello said he will get in touch with the gardai about how to prevent this happening again. He said: "This is not the first time this has happened to Weaver Park.

"I will be speaking with local gardai to ensure they have what they need to protect the community and to stop this happening again, and again."

On Twitter, Dublin Fire Brigade said: "Unfortunately, firefighters were called to a playground fire off Cork Street earlier this evening. One fire engine from Dolphins Barn fire station responded and quickly extinguished the fire.

"We're asking members of the public to report any suspicious behaviour to Gardaí"
