Watch: Falcons fourth-round pick John Cominsky has overcome long odds

Entering the 2019 NFL draft, many Falcons fans were expecting the team to add an edge rusher early. However, the team decided to bulk up their offensive line instead, waiting until the fourth round to add Charleston defensive end John Cominsky.

A Division II product, Cominsky the first player drafted from Charleston in 80 years, but his story goes back farther than that. The 285-pounder originally joined his college team as 210-pound option quarterback. He switched over to defense and found his true calling.

As a senior, Cominsky posted 18.5 tackles for a loss, three sacks and earned an invite to the Senior Bowl, where he played well enough to be invited to the NFL Scouting Combine. There, Cominsky ran a 4.69 40-yard-dash and wowed scouts with his athleticism. Thomas Dimitroff was impressed enough to trade up two spots and take him with pick No. 135.

NFL Network’s Good Morning Football recently ran a segment looking at Cominsky’s story and how he comes from the same small Ohio town as Dimitroff. Watch.

You don’t normally expect much from a fourth-rounder, but it’s clear Cominsky won’t back down from the challenge. The Falcons may have found just the guy they needed in the unlikeliest of places.
