Watch: Extinction Rebellion activist delays flight as he stands up at take off to give climate lecture

This is the moment an Extinction Rebellion protester stands up to deliver a climate change lecture just as his plane was about to take off.

The flight from London City Airport to Dublin was ready to leave as the activist stood up in the aisle to deliver his speech, delaying the passengers on board.

The cabin crew alerted the pilot and passengers were disembarked from the plane before being let back on later.

BBC Newsnight political editor Nicholas Watt tweeted about the incident. He said: "My flight from London City airport to Dublin has just been grounded by a climate change protester.

"On runway and about to take off when smartly dressed man in late middle age stood up with iPhone to deliver lecture on climate change up and down aisle.

"Cabin crew calmly and very politely asked protester to resume his seat. Politely but persistently he declined and proceeded to deliver his lecture on climate change in aisle.

"Some passengers annoyed, others listened to lecture with humour as cabin crew alerted pilot."

Andy Millward, who filmed the video which appeared on Twitter, said: "We were disembarked but now being loaded back on."

It comes as hundreds of Extinction Rebellion attempt to shut down the London airport by blocking the main entrance for passengers with some gluing themselves to the floor.

Earlier this morning, two protesters climbed onto the roof of the airport entrance to hang up a large pink banner reading "our fragile planet is dying".

One appeared to cut his hands on the razor wire stretched around it.

The activists are attempting a three-day 'Hong Kong-style' occupation of the terminal to highlight what they claim is the "incompatibility" of the airport's planned £2 billion expansion in meeting the Government's legally binding commitment to go net carbon neutral by 2050.

Flights appeared to be operating as normal despite the protest.

A spokesman for the London City Airport said: "We can confirm that a number of protesters have arrived at London City Airport.

"We continue to work closely with the Metropolitan Police to ensure the safe operation of the airport, which remains fully open and operational.

"As of 9.15am there have been over 60 flights which have either arrived or departed.

"If you are flying from London City today, please check the status of your flight with your airline before travelling to the airport."
