Watch emotional Clap For Our Carers video outside LGI as police and firefighters thank NHS staff

Thousands of people stood on their doorsteps on Thursday to applaud NHS staff, but undoubtedly the loudest cheer of the night came outside Leeds General Infirmary.

The video above shows the emotional scenes at the Jubilee Wing entrance to the Leeds city centre hospital as hundreds of people came together to show their support for the frontline workers helping to save lives during the coronavirus pandemic.

Now in its third week, the Clap Four Carers movement has gone from strength to strength as communities across the UK show their appreciation for those battling to save thousands of people from the disease - and the support shown in Leeds has been phenomenal.

What started as a social media craze has now snowballed into a weekly event which serves as a reminder of just how hard our NHS staff are working.

The footage from outside LGI was posted by Chris Lofthouse, a firefighter in Leeds who joined his colleagues despite not even being on duty last night.

Inspector Lucy Leadbeater, of West Yorkshire Police, also posted a separate video on Twitter of dozens of officers joining in as sirens sounded and blue lights flashed on ambulances and police vehicles.

"Absolute superheroes doing an amazing job," she tweeted.

"Thank you from all of us."
