Watch East Kilbride street's YMCA tribute to frontline workers battling coronavirus

A dance teacher got her neighbours moving with their own unique way of celebrating NHS staff and frontline workers amid the coronavirus pandemic on Thursday night.

Lesley Curbelo Valdiva rallied the troops at Glen Feshie in St Leonards and they YMCA'd and sloshed their hearts out to show their appreciation - all a safe distance apart of course. And there was even a bit of Highland Dancing thrown in.

It was part of the 'Clap for Carers' event held every Thursday night where folk applaud all those on the frontline battling COVID-19.

There has also been emergency service workers including police, staff, and public applauding outside Hairmyres Hospital in East Kilbride.

Lesley told the East Kilbride News: "My daughter and I put wee letters through neighbours doors inviting them to join us on Thursday for a dance to go alongside the 'Clap for Carers' at 8pm.

"I usually run dance and exercise classes, called 'Funcise', in the United Reformed Church and Claremont Church and know it's great exercise and just wanted to do something to lift folk.

"There are quite a few older folk in my street and they might not see folk from one week to the next so this was a good way to get them involved in something and they had a great time.

"We are definitely going to keep it going and next week I am going to set up chairs for folk - always to metres apart - for those who maybe aren't quite as fit as others, that way they can still feel as if they are part of it.

"We are also going to sing Happy Birthday to the war veteran, Captain Tom Moore, who raised all the money for the NHS."

Lesley added: "Everyone is doing such a fantastic job in such difficult times, from the NHS and carers to shop workers and everyone else on the frontline.

"I just wanted to find my own way of saying thank you and also just put a smile on folks faces. And it seemed to work as they all loved it and can't wait to do it again.

"It was so nice to see everyone smiling and giving many of our neighbours company for a few minutes."
