I ran across this when looking at Haskins and what folks are saying about the intangibles that he possesses. I mean everyone knows he’s got a great arm and unbelievable accuracy, but what is it about him that might separate Haskins from others — much like a Tom Brady. Is he that good?
I found a film piece put out by BTN called Film Session, and it’s run by Gerry DiNardo — who by the way, does a fantastic job. So all credit there for the show and video piece. Also, thanks to Jordan Reid for sharing it on Twitter.
In this twelve minute clip, Haskins goes through several plays from the Michigan game that DiNardo singled out. After watching it, I don’t care who you are, the understanding of the game, protections and innate ability that Haskins has in his tool chest are off the charts.
It’s going to have NFL folks drooling.
A few things stand out here:
- Ryan Day is a master at teaching and understanding the quarterback position. He has clearly rubbed off on Haskins.
- There was a thought that the Buckeyes worked a mismatch against No. 28 (Brandon Watson) if you watched the game. Haskins basically confirms that in his comments.
- Haskins has a unique ability to feel pressure and progress very quickly through his reads.
- His understanding of the offense — even positions he’s not responsible for are amazing. He has an unbelievably high IQ for the game.
- He has a team first attitude and is very, very well spoken and extremely bright.
After watching this, I only expect Haskins’ draft stock to rise as we get closer to the big day. He’s going to absolutely blow the minds of some NFL executives and scouts with his understanding of the game. He’ll kill it on the whiteboard and his character really shines.
