WATCH: Dustin Poirier beats Conor McGregor with vicious barrage of knockout blows after clinical display in UFC 257 main event

Dustin Poirier has beaten Conor McGregor after a vicious barrage of knockout blows in the second round of their UFC 257 clash in Abu Dhabi.

The Diamond got the job done after a precision assault on McGregor's right calf, with a constant stream of kicks disabling the Dubliner before Poirier picked up the pace.

And McGregor, clearly uncomfortable, couldn't answer as a big left hand from Poirier signalled the beginning of the end.

What followed was a number of clean shots as a stumbling McGregor struggled to react, before one last right hand dropped the 32-year-old and left referee Herb Dean no choice but to stop the fight.

The Lafayette, Louisiana native celebrated and teased a potential trilogy fight after the fact, while a dejected McGregor accepted the loss.

However, he said he would be back in 2021, so perhaps another go round with Poirier will be on the cards soon.

In any event, tonight belonged to the American fighter, who ultimately laid the groundwork for his victory early.

After both men put in some work up against the fence, with McGregor once again showing off the shoulder strikes that were so effective against Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone, the latter half of the first round became a battle of McGregor's jab against Poirier's calf kick.

And while The Notorious was able to land some clean shots in a strike-heavy end to the opening five minutes, it was Poirier's kicks that did the most damage.

The Crumlin man was soon limping and, ultimately, would begin to lose the battle as the leg failed him, leading to the finish.

A deserved victory for Dustin Poirier, but it's back to the drawing board for Conor McGregor.
