Watch: Drew Brees becomes NFL’s all-time leader in passing yards

It’s been exactly one year since New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees made history and became the NFL’s all-time leader in career passing yards, striking rookie wide receiver Tre’Quan Smith for a long touchdown pass against the Washington Redskins to take the lead in the record books. Brees surpassed former NFL quarterback Peyton Manning (71,940 yards) to claim the top spot, putting him above other NFL legends like Tom Brady (71,923 and counting), Brett Favre (71,838), and Dan Marino (61,361). Brees currently paces everyone else with 74,845 yards, and likely wants to continue building on his lead as soon as he’s able to return from an injury to his throwing hand.

You can relive the moment in the video embedded below, or by following this link. Where were you when Brees made NFL history?

Right now, Brees has to be feeling pretty good about things. He’s doing his part to help a capable backup and maybe-heir to the throne lead the Saints during his absence, giving Teddy Bridgewater as much advice and assistance as he wants. Brees’ legacy is secure given his long list of accomplishments in the NFL — not just this passing yards total, but many other records and a victory over Manning in Super Bowl XLIV. But there has to be a part of him that wants to go out on top. Winning another championship a decade later just might do it, and the way things are trending, the Saints just might reach that stage again.
