The Hamilton Tarmac vehicle exploded on Shaw Road in Prestwick before emergency services rushed to the scene at around 11.40am.

"The other two are talking to the fire brigade.

"They look like contractors for the council to tar the roads."

Smoke could be seen billowing from miles away and another witness reported hearing a bang that sounded like "an airplane had crashed" from their garden.

They said: "I was out in the garden when I heard a loud explosion.

"It sounded like a bomb had gone off or an airplane had crashed, I hope no one was hurt."
