Donald Trump greets Leo Varadkar with 'bro-shake' as he arrives at Shannon Airport

US President Donald Trump appeared to greet Taoiseach Leo Varadkar with a 'bro-shake' as he arrived in Ireland.

Air Force One touched down at Shannon Airport at 4.42pm this afternoon.

After disembarking the plane, the American Commander and Chief shook Mr Varadkar's hand, before appearing to give him a hand clasp, nicknamed a 'bro-shake'.

Mr Varadkar then greeted First Lady Melania Trump with a kiss on each cheek.

Significant measures are in place to protect Mr Trump, with the US Secret Service and gardai launching an unprecedented security operation ahead of Air Force One's scheduled landing.

Annual leave for gardai was cancelled this week and hundreds of Irish troops are being deployed to Clare and Limerick from army barracks across the country.

Mr Trump arrived with his wife Melania and will meet Taoiseach Leo Varadkar before heading to his five-star Doonbeg golf resort.

On Thursday he will depart Ireland for a day trip to France to attend the D-Day remembrance in Normandy and is due to return to Doonbeg in the evening.

Road closures and a no-fly zone has been implemented around Doonbeg, Co Clare , with residents who live within the exclusion boundary needing a special pass to access their homes.

The trip, which is not a State Visit, has not come without controversy.

The Donald Trump baby blimp will be sent to Dublin for the US President’s visit.

The inflatable will take to the air on Thursday as thousands of protesters gather for a series of rallies across the country.

A huge number of road closures and diversions will also be in place for the visit.
