The gunman who shot former Boston Red Sox great David Ortiz was hired to do so, according to Dominican Republic Police Director Ney Aldrin Bautista.
Bautista disclosed this information Wednesday afternoon at a news conference but did not disclose a motive in the shooting if there is one known.
Six suspects, including the alleged gunman, have been detained. Ortiz was shot Sunday night in the DR, suffering gunshot wounds to his lower back/abdomen area and the bullet went through his stomach requiring immediate surgery.
Ortiz was in stable enough condition to be flown back to Boston, where he underwent a second surgery. Tiffany Ortiz said early Wednesday that the former slugger was “making good progress towards recovery” at Massachusetts General Hospital.
