Golden State Warriors fans should be thanking the basketball gods for Don Nelson’s confidence in drafting Stephen Curry.
Dell Curry, a former NBA hooper and father to Warriors magician Steph Curry, revealed in a recent interview with NBC Sports Northwest that he told the Warriors not to draft Steph as he was preparing for the 2009 NBA draft.
Nelson, who was then Golden State’s head coach, called the elder Curry to see what he thought about the move. Dell replied, “Don’t.”
In the interview, he continues: “We just thought his game fit a better team, a better scenario, the way another team was playing, up and down, faster, and had a better locker room.”
Spoiler: The Warriors drafted him anyway. Three NBA titles and several league records later … things seemed to work out.
