WATCH: DE Corey Vereen walks away from XFL over salary issue

Defensive end Corey Vereen has decided that he’s better off financially without the XFL.

The former Tennessee player withdrew Thursday from his role with the Los Angeles Wildcats after being selected in the eighth round of the league’s draft last week, saying (via his agency) that the salary is lower than was advertised.

“The salary schedule did not come close to matching what was talked about rampantly throughout the XFL combine workouts and was discussed online by many sources,” a statement from Logan Brown Sports, which represents Vereen, said. “We wish the upstart league the best and would be open to the idea of playing when salaries reach an appropriate minimum.”

According to the statement, the XFL made players and agents aware of the actual payroll schedule and salary. The base salary is $27,040 with a $1,685 per-game active bonus and a $2,222 weekly win bonus.

Vereen, who also played in the Alliance of American Football league this past spring, has a degree and a day job in computer science. The statement from Logan Brown Sports explains that Vereen’s plan is to continue to stay in football shape and pursue an opportunity within the sport if the XFL salary reaches “an appropriate minimum.”
