David Ortiz was responsive Monday, answering questions from doctors with one-word answers following surgery he underwent Sunday night after being shot in the Dominican Republic.
Big Papi’s gunshot wound was to his lower back/abdominal area and a hospital spokesperson told CNN that the bullet went through his stomach.
Ortiz’s personal assistant, Leo Lopez, told USA Today Sports that the retired athlete’s responses to doctors were “Just yes or no. Not a lot of words, but he can talk.”
The Ortiz family expects the 43 year old to be back in Boston onMonday night via a plane that is sent by the Red Sox. Ortiz is expected to receive further care at Massachusetts General Hospital.
