David “Big Papi” Ortiz is stable, awake and resting comfortably following a second surgery, per his wife, Tiffany Ortiz. The retired Red Sox great was shot Sunday in his native Dominican Republic and suffered damage to his liver, small intestine, and large intestine, leading to emergency surgery that same night.
Ortiz underwent a second exploratory surgery Monday night at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, where he will stay for the next several days to recover. His wife said on Tuesday that doctors expect to see a full recovery and that he is alert and has talked with his family.
The Dominican National Police said in a statement Monday night that they are continuing to investigate the shooting after reports implicating one of their officers surfaced.
