Watch County Durham school children sing to spread messages of positivity during coronavirus crisis

School children in County Durham have sent out messages of support to their fellow pupils and community.

Pupils at Witton Gilbert Primary School and Pelton Community Primary School both made positive music videos ahead of their schools closing due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Year 6 pupils at Witton Gilbert Primary School created their own lyrics and dance moves to the song 'This is Me', from the film The Greatest Showman.

With the help of their teacher, Bethan Howells, the pupils wrote lyrics, planned the storyboard for clips and recorded the video in school.

The video, which has been published on the school website, aims to spread an uplifting message of reassurance to bring the community together.

Headteacher Paula Nelson said she was overwhelmed by the creativity which the students have demonstrated.

Mrs Nelson said: “We are all incredibly proud of our Year 6 children's resilience and positivity at this very challenging time.

"They wanted to do something special, particularly because they don't know if the will ever return fully to their primary school.

"Their creativity and teamwork was outstanding and we are all impressed with the result.”

At Pelton Community Primary School, youngsters in each year group recorded a video and made artwork which they plan to share with local care homes.

Teacher Catherine Nay said: "It has been quite hard over the last week and they were talking about how they think it will affect people.

County Durham primary share messages of positivity

"There are quite a few families working from home and they were talking about how people could be feeling lonely.

"It is really hard because there are lots of people who are in care homes who won't get to see their families.

"We wanted to do something to cheer them up.

"So each year group made pictures with messages to share and videos.

"They have done them to songs they thought people would like, such as Build You Up Buttercup, The Beach Boys and Sound of Music."

She added: "The video has already been shared as well with nurses in the emergency department at a hospital in Glasgow and they have sent us a message to say how touched they were.

Councillor Olwyn Gunn, cabinet member for children and young people’s services at Durham County Council, said: “It is fantastic to see pupils, staff and the wider school community come together to lift people’s spirits and show such positivity in a time of unprecedented uncertainty.

"These pupils have worked hard to put together this heart-warming video which I’m sure will encourage their fellow pupils and schools across the county to keeping showing each other support and not let the current climate ‘beat them down’.
