WATCH Coast Guard helicopter to the rescue after two trapped on sandbank in Sandymount

Two people were rescued after they became trapped in a sandbank off Sandymount this evening.

The Irish Coast Guard helicopter Rescue 116 swooped into action shortly after 9pm.

Luckily the casualties were recovered and didn't suffer any injuries during their frightening ordeal.

It was a busy day for the Coast Guard in the area, with the Dun Laoghaire branch responding to four incidents, including a serious head injury near the Forty Foot in Sandycove.

They said: "A busy afternoon for Irish Coast Guard - Dun Laoghaire crews, with four different incidents, one after another.

"The team responded to a casualty near the Forty Foot who sustained a serious head injury.

"Along with RNLI Dun Laoghaire ILB, DLRCC Lifeguards, National Ambulance Service Paramedics, Dublin Fire Brigade and local Gardai, the casualty was treated on scene and taken by sea back to Dun Laoghaire due to the hazardous conditions on the rocks. Best wishes to the casualty for a speedy recovery.

"Crews also dealt with three other minor incidents this afternoon requiring the team to provide first aid treatment until NAS paramedics arrived.

"Thank you all the services for their assistance, great team work.

"Remember, if you see anyone in difficulty in or near the water, dial 112/999 immediately and ask for the Coast Guard."
