Watch clanging manhole cover driving Scots residents mad for a year as council urged to act

A Scots woman says she has been dealing with constant clanging for over a year due to a loose manhole cover on her street.

The Edinburgh local, who wishes to remain anonymous, shared her experience and a video of the noise on social media.

The video shows cars driving over the cover on Holyrood Road, with the surrounding buildings and narrow street proving distracting.

She said: "It's so loud and it's worse on the weekends because it's just a train of cars, non-stop," according to Edinburgh Live.

The woman added that the issue dates back to summer 2020 and she first contacted Edinburgh City Council that September.

She then contacted all four of the city centre councillors in March 2021, of which, two responded.

Both councillors, Jo Mowat and Claire Miller, have since been assisting with the problem.

The local raged: "I do want to emphasise the help from the two councillors.

"I think it's being held up with whoever the roads crew people are and no one wanting to take responsibility for it to have to repair it."

"I've tried to find out which utility it is so I can contact them directly, I even contacted the makers of the manhole cover," she added.

The last update that the person received was on August 12.

Scottish Water said there appears to be cables underneath it, instead of a pipe.

A spokesperson said: "Our teams have inspected the manhole and we do not believe it belongs to Scottish Water as it appears to contain a cable rather than a pipe.

"We have engaged with Edinburgh Council and continue to work closely with them when matters like this are raised."

Edinburgh Council have also released a similar statement, saying "We are aware of the issue surrounding the manhole cover and are actively liaising with the appropriate authorities to try and resolve the issue."
