The Los Angeles Chargers will be without safety Derwin James for a “significant,” period of time (according to NFL Insider Ian Rapoport) after he suffered a stress fracture in his right foot Thursday.
Friday, James watched Chargers practice from the sideline with a walking boot on the injured foot. Head coach Anthony Lynn told reporters Friday that he does expect James to play again in 2019, but that he does not have a specific timeline for the young star’s return. The coach did not rule out surgery or a trip to the IR, saying “we’re going to miss him a lot.”
James was drafted by the Chargers in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft out of Florida State University. In his rookie NFL season, he totaled 105 tackles (75 solos) and made 3 interceptions en route to earning All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors.
