Watch Chapeltown's touching tribute to John 'Kooler Bar' Collier as ice cream van jingle played one last time

Chapeltown came together to pay a touching tribute to legendary Leeds ice cream man John 'Kooler Bar' Collier.

People gave a 'lolly salute'', two white doves were released and the Kooler Bar ice cream van's jingle was played as customers said goodbye to one of the city's heroes.

John had been an ice-cream man in Chapeltown, Harehills and Roundhay for more than four decades - and over that time he became a staple in the local community, and a person much-loved by many.

Selling hot dogs and burgers from his van as well as sweet treats, he became known for giving away food and ice creams, with friend Gary Hendrickson saying “He must’ve given away 10 times more than he ever earned."

John, who was in his mid-seventies, passed away last week following a battle with a lung condition.

And yesterday a crowd gathered to pay their respects to 'the greatest ice cream man of all time'.

A video posted on Facebook of the heartfelt tribute was captioned: "two white doves and raise your lollies for Kooler.

"The greatest ice cream man of all time."

The crowd could be heard applauding as they were asked to raise their lollies for the ice cream man, as they then began chanting 'Kooler.'

Mo Majii, who had posted the video to the community's local Facebook page, shared his own fond memories of 'Kooler'.

He said: "I was 8 years old and saw his ice cream van outside of my school - Leopold Primary - at home time.

"I was the kid that never got that 20p screwball or 99 with a flake but later that evening I heard his ice cream jingle and he was in my street.

"I had like a shiny 2p in my pocket that I got from school - we used to get awarded those on our birthdays.

"So I tried to trade that for an ice cream but he gave me one for free.

"I still remember that strawberry sherbet oozing down the folds of the cold cream on that cone."
