Carmelo Anthony is not having the best summer.
He’s remained unsigned through NBA free agency as players, trainers and even national media advocate to get him one more year in the league.
It turns out he was rejected on the international hoops scene as well. In a recent interview with Sports Illustrated, USA Basketball managing director Jerry Colangelo said Melo’s representation approached him about playing in the upcoming FIBA World Cup, but he denied the request.
“He was a very good international player,” Colangelo told SI. “But for where we are and what we’re doing, that conceivably could have been a distraction. I understand why the request was made. He’s trying to reestablish himself. I think that has to be done in the [NBA].”
Anthony has not played in the NBA since Nov. 8, 2018, the end of a 10-game stint with the Houston Rockets.
