This isn’t the first time this conversation has happened and it likely won’t be the last, but it is the first time Kyler Murray has talked baseball on the record since finishing his first season in the NFL.
According to the Arizona Republic, the 2019 first overall NFL Draft pick says he could handle playing in the NFL and MLB in the same calendar year.
“I think I could. … Athletically, I think yeah, I could do it,” Murray told Bob McManaman of AZCentral.com. “I’ve been playing both my whole life. I would love to add that to the resume.”
The Oakland A’s drafted Murray in the first round of the 2018 MLB Draft. He turned down roughly $5 million from the organization to pursue football, staying in college then tweeting in February 2019 that he was fully committed to becoming an NFL franchise quarterback.
The A’s still own Murray’s rights (the team didn’t get a compensatory pick despite his decision), but it’s unclear if the QB was saying he will try to do both or simply is still interested in and considering the possibility of both.
The Cardinals finished the 2019 season with a 5-10 record. Murray completed 64.4% of his pass attempts for 3,722 yards and 20 touchdowns. He threw 12 interceptions and was sacked 48 times.
