WATCH: Cam Newton rehabbing aggravated left foot sprain instead of practicing

The Carolina Panthers (0-2) practiced without quarterback Cam Newton Tuesday. General Manager Marty Hurney told reporters that Newton was rehabbing instead of practicing after he aggravated his left foot sprain suffered during the preseason during Week 2 as the team lost 20-14 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

There is no clear timetable for Newton’s return to the team. “We will see how it goes,” Hurney said, according to The Athletic’s Jourdan Rodrigue.

Newton told head coach Ron Rivera that he felt soreness in his foot after the Thursday Night Football loss, Rivera told reporters after practice Tuesday morning.

Newton first injured his foot versus the New England Patriots in the third week of the 2019 preseason. He was injured to end last season and Kyle Allen made his first career start in Week 17 in Newton’s place. Allen is listed behind Newton on the Panthers’ current depth chart and is expected to start for the Panthers Sunday versus the Arizona Cardinals (0-1-1).

Rookie Will Grier is the Panthers’ third-string quarterback, he was selected 100th overall in the 2019 NFL Draft.
