WATCH: California Gov. Gavin Newsom signs image and likeness bill into law

The state of California is moving forward in its efforts to change amateurism in college sports.

On Monday Gov. Gavin Newsom signed SB 206, the state’s Fair Pay to Play bill, making it state law. The law will allow college athletes to more easily make money off their own name, image, and likeness starting in 2023. Student-athletes also will be allowed to hire agents to find business deals on their behalf.

Newsom discussed the legislation with LeBron James, among other athletes, in a clip shared from the governor’s account.

The NCAA issued a statement Monday saying changes should be made to support student-athletes, but those changes should be made through the NCAA.
