Dramatic footage has captured the moment that a burst water main in Bury started to flood the M66.
The water pipe burst on a housing development site near Manchester Road and Bury New Road in Ramsbottom.
A huge fountain of water was sprayed into the air and some of it landed in the motorway carriageway causing flooding.
The A56 southbound carriageway to the M66 Junction 1 is shut due to flooding.
"Traffic Officers are currently at scene, If planning travel, avoid the area," Highways England said.
Police traffic officers and a team from the North West Motorway Police were called to the scene of the water main burst, which happened at around 3.30pm.
A minor crash then caused further delays on the road.
United Utilities confirmed that engineers were on site trying to fix the problem.
A spokesman also told MyBury and Manchester Evening News that the water pipe is believed to have been physically damaged.
