Social media shows that there are certainly Nationals fans hoping to send a message to former franchise player Bryce Harper about the star’s exit and subsequent Nationals trip to the World Series.
Harper left D.C. to sign with the Philadelphia Phillies during free agency entering this season, signing a four-year, $330 million dollar deal after reportedly turning down $300 million from the franchise he’d always played with.
Now, with the Nats in the World Series for the first time since 1933, Harper says that he is happy for his former team and has no problem with his (former) fans turning his old jersey into something they can wear to current games.
In the interview with The Athletic, Harper also said that he does not regret his decision.
Via The Athletic:
“You know, jealousy isn’t good,” he said. “For me, it’s about having the gratitude to go out and do what I do each day and not having an attitude towards anybody else.
“I think it’s about being able to be the person that I am,” the six-time All-Star added. “And not saying to myself, ‘Oh my gosh, I can’t believe I’m not a National.’ Or, ‘Oh my gosh, those guys are doing what they’re doing. I can’t believe it. I’m so jealous.’ No. I’m so happy for them.”
The 27-year-old added that he is watching and rooting for his old team and friends. He doesn’t seem bothered by re-works of his jersey.
“I mean, they bought the jerseys,” Harper said. “It’s over. I wear No. 3 now. And I play for the Philadelphia Phillies – you know what I’m saying? I appreciate them supporting me before and buying those jerseys. But now they can do whatever they want with them.”
