WATCH: Bryce Harper hopes Mookie Betts surpasses deal in free agency

The Phillies’ trip to play the Red Sox this week has Bryce Harper naming the next MLB star that he hopes is able to get a contract to beat his own record deal.

When Harper signed with Philadelphia following the 2018 season, he signed a 13-year, $330 million deal. The free agency deal was the highest-paid contract in the history of American sports when it was penned.

Mike Trout has since signed a 12-year, $430 million extensions with the Angels, and Harper says he hopes that Boston’s Mookie Betts follows suit and secures a top-paying contract when he becomes an unrestricted free agent in 2020.

“Just like Trout did,” Harper said, via NBC Sports Boston. “Mookie’s an incredible player. If he has an opportunity to make more money than I do, then I hope he does.”

Harper added that he hopes Betts takes the opportunity to entertain attention from any team that pursues him, even outside of the Sox. Betts previously turned down a $200 million, an eight-year offer from the Red Sox following the 2017 season.
