Watch Bristol Rovers’ stirring tribute to Gas legend Stuart Taylor

Bristol Rovers paid an emotional tribute to club legend Stuart Taylor before the Southend United game this weekend.

Club record appearance holder Taylor died in October this year after suffering from dementia aged 72.

Before the Southend game, the stadium took part in a minutes silence to remember Taylor, with stadium announcer Lance Cook doing a stirring speech beforehand.

Mr Cook said: "Everybody at Bristol Rovers Football Club was saddened to learn of the death of former player Stuart Taylor, who passed away at the age of 72 in October.

"A towering defender standing at 6ft 5inches tall, Taylor spent his entire professional playing career at The Gas, making 546 appearances between 1965 and 1980, 207 of which were made consecutively, making him the all time record appearance holder at the club. A record that is unlikely to ever be broken in the modern era.

"Taylor’s loyalty to Rovers went beyond his playing career by making a brief spell as the club’s commercial manager, and in recent years by watching the team play.

"The word legend often gets overused in football, but Taylor defined the meaning of it. He was one of our own, and he will forever be the undisputed legend of Bristol Rovers Football Club."

Taylor was remembered fondly by his former teammates following his death, who recalled his size and skill as a player.

Former Gas midfielder Tom Stanton said: "The size was intimidating - you'd look at that and think, 'wow, pretty daunting' but he was an accomplished and skilful player.

"He was exceptionally good at reading the game. He always seemed under control, getting things done. You knew you could rely on him. Things would go past us in midfield and 9/10 the big fella was there."
