Sometimes, it’s better when things go wrong.
During the Boston Celtics’ media availability session the day after their Game 4 loss to the Miami Heat in the East Finals, a reporter’s question gone very wrong provided a moment of much-needed levity.
With most of the media interviewing players and coaching staff doing so remotely via telepresence, occasional glitches have become part of the landscape of virtual reporting.
On Thursday afternoon, it was Jay King of The Athletic’s turn to struggle against the whims of untamed technology as he sought to ask Stevens a question, the Celtics coach recommending he try hitting the “mute” button.

Then it seemed as if it might be the team’s Zoom call wizards, who route our questions through the popular remote video conferencing program with skill — at least when the program is behaving.
But Boston’s tech wizards double-checked while poor King struggled to get in his question, his words finally erupting into a profane outburst captured on the call.
“Was that the question you had for me, Jay?” asked Stevens mirthfully, perhaps intimating that a similar response would have been appropriate in response to Game 4’s outcome.
We’ve all had one of those days, and the Celtics just had theirs on Wednesday. Hopefully, on Friday the defensive rotations and Zoom calls will both be in top shape.
