The star-studded comedy drama The Big Short has been given an Oscar-friendly release date in December, adding heat to a so-far underwhelming awards race.

The film has Academy-Award heft, starring previous Oscar nominees Ryan Gosling, Brad Pitt and Steve Carell, and winners Christian Bale, Melissa Leo and Oscar winner Marisa Tomei, and has just revealed itself in a new trailer, giving a deeper look at the plot.

The Big Short is based on a book by Michael Lewis, who also wrote Moneyball, which was adapted for the big screen and starred Pitt. It focuses on the men who predicted the housing crash of 2008 and so betted against Wall Street, making money along the way.

It’s from the director Adam McKay, typically associated with comedies such as Anchorman and Step Brothers. Paramount are hoping for awards glory, with an 11 December US release date and a prime spot closing the AFI festival in Los Angeles.

Pitt is set to bookend the festival, also appearing in the opening film By the Sea, opposite his wife Angelina Jolie.
