Watch Boris Johnson's speech as new Prime Minister of UK in full

Boris Johnson made his first speech as Prime Minister today in which he promised to break the Brexit impasse and deliver firm action.

Standing outside 10 Downing Street after being appointed by the Queen, Mr Johnson said:“The time has come to act.

“To take decisions, to give strong leadership and to change this country for the better,” he said.

It comes after he beat Jeremy Hunt in the race to become Conservative Party leader.

Speaking to millions of Britons watching the handover of power from Theresa May, he solemnly pledged: “My job is to serve you, the people.”

Before heading inside the residence of Number 10 he ended his speech saying: "We in this Government will work flat out to give this country the leadership it deserves and that work begins now."
