Watch Boris Johnson's coronavirus update as he confirms schools will be closed

Schools will close from Friday in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Boris Johnson and Education Secretary Gavin Williamson announced the measure following earlier announcements in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Read the full story here.

All exams due to take place in May and June have also been postponed.

The number of people to test positive for coronavirus in the UK as of 9am on Wednesday is 2,626, up from 1,950 at the same time on Tuesday, according to the Department of Health.

A total of 56,221 people have been tested in the UK, with 53,595 negative results.
