Watch Boli Mbombo clash with Alfredo Morelos as Celtic prepare to finalise £3m signing

Celtic are closing in on a deal for Belgian full-back Boli Mbombo from Rapid Vienna.

The 24-year-old has spent his entire career so far in Belgium and Austria but he is no stranger to Scottish football - or Rangers hothead Alfredo Morelos for that matter.

Mbombo has been described as a full-hearted attacking left-back and that certainly appeared the case when he clashed with Morelos in the closing stages of Rapid's Europa League victory last year.

With the clock ticking down on the Austrians' 1-0 victory, Mbombo and Morelos got involved in a spot of 'handbags' that saw the Rapid man take a shove to the chest only to respond with a double clip of the ear for the Rangers striker.

Morelos theatrically hit the deck and although the incident occurred right in front of referee Paolo Silvio Mazzoleni no action was taken against either player.

Rapid went on to qualify for the last 32 at Rangers' expense despite earlier in the group stage having gone down 3-1 at Ibrox.

Mbombo was a 72nd-minute substitute in the first match but played the full 90 in his side's crucial victory in the Allianz Stadion.

He's also faced the Hoops, playing at left-back for Rapid in a 1-1 draw with Brendan Rodgers' Celtic side in a pre-season friendly two years ago.

Mbombo left Rapid's current training camp on Wednesday morning as he makes his way to Scotland to undergo a medical ahead of completing his switch to Celtic.

The deal should beat Thursday's Champions League signing deadline and Neil Lennon said: “We are not to far away and he will be another good addition to the squad.

“He gives us competition at left back, he’s strong, athletic and good on the ball.

“He fits the criteria and hopefully he’ll be in before Thursday.”
