Watch: BBC journalist left heartbroken as ‘home bombed’ after Russian invasion

A BBC journalist was left heartbroken after finding out her home has been bombed while live on air.

Olga Malchevska revealed her devastation at the destruction to her mother’s home as she discussed Vladimir Putin’s war on Ukraine.

In conversation with her colleague Karin Giannone, the journalist said just received a text from her mother.

Asked if Russian forced had come close to the centre of Kyiv, Malchevska said: “It looks like that from the pictures I’m getting, but basically - I’ve just got a message from my mum.

“She has taken shelter. She’s hiding in the basement. Luckily she was not in our building that was bombed at night.”

As footage emerged of the situation in Ukraine, the reporter said one of the pictures “was her home”.

The presenter was left speechless when she witnessed the devastation of the building she once lived in.

Giannone tweeted the heartbreaking moment as her colleague discovered her home had been hit.

She said: “The moment my BBC Ukrainian colleague sees pictures of her family home, partially destroyed overnight in Kyiv.

“We did not know until that moment it was her actual building that had been hit. Thankfully Olga’s family is safe.”

On Friday afternoon, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) reported Ukrainian forces still hold key cities in the country.

The MoD also claimed Russia had made “limited progress”,  although forces had reached the suburbs of the capital.

They said: “Russian strikes and exchange of artillery fire continued throughout the night and into the morning.

“At approximately 4.30am air raid sirens were heard across Lviv in western Ukraine. We continue to see no evidence of strikes in Lviv.”
