Athletic Bilbao vs Manchester United: Match Preview

Manchester United's dismal season could still end with silverware and Champions League qualification... but to stand any chance of that, they must first make it through a difficult two-legged semi-final against Athletic Club. (And yes, we have called them Athletic Bilbao consistently above, and yes, we know that's wrong - but that's what more people search for and we're just trying to help people find it.)

Manchester United go into Thursday's game sitting 14th in the Premier League and without a domestic win in their last five games.

But they will feel like the stars are in their favour after their unbelievable comeback victory over Lyon in the quarter-finals. After a draw in the first leg, Amorim's side led 2-0 at half time in the second leg at Old Trafford before being pegged back to 2-2.

Lyon were reduced to ten men just before extra time began but took a two-goal lead with just 11 minutes left to play...only for United to score three times in seven minutes to win the tie.

Athletic are likely to pose another huge test, however - especially as they have the extra incentive of the final just so happening to be hosted at their own stadium this year.

Sitting fourth in La Liga and well on course to qualify for the Champions League regardless of their Europa League performance, Athletic knocked out Italian giants Roma in the round of 16 with a 4-3 aggregate victory before seeing off Rangers 2-0 in the quarter-finals.

San Mames will host the final on Wednesday, May 21, with the victorious semi-finalists from this clash set to face either Tottenham Hotspur or Norwegian surprise package Bodo/Glimt.
