Watch as warships sail up Clyde ahead of major NATO military exercise

Warships have stared arriving in Glasgow ahead of a major NATO military exercise on the River Clyde.

A total of eight frigates from Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France and Portugal will be in the city as part of as Joint Warrior, one of the largest military exercises of its kind in Europe.

It will be running from October 4 and 15 and will involve involve 28 warships, two submarines and 81 aircraft with more than 6000 military personnel taking part in the huge exercise.

The event is set to be staged at military ranges across the country and at maritime exercise areas off the east, west and north coasts of Scotland - with a number of the vessels taking part leaving from Glasgow and Faslane.

Joint Warrior takes place twice annually and is designed, planned and delivered by the Joint Tactical Exercise Planning Staff based at Northwood in London, who will move to HM Naval Base Clyde to coordinate events during the fortnight.

A MoD statement about Joint Warrrior told Glasgow Live: “The scenario of the exercise will mirror a broad range of crisis and conflict situations which could realistically be experienced in real-world operations".
