Watch as staff applaud as Irishman leaves hospital after recovering from Covid-19

This is the emotional moment Irish healthcare staff lined a hospital corridor to applaud a coronavirus patient as they leave the ICU.

The joyful scenes were filmed in Causeway Hospital, Coleraine on Wednesday as 56-year-old Geoffrey McKillop was pushed out of the Intensive Care Unit.

The father of three from Bushmills, Co Antrim was ill at home with COVID-19 for ten days before being taken straight to the ICU ward and ventilated for 16 days.

Speaking to the Irish Daily Mirror his niece Laura said: "My family just received the best video in the world.

"My Uncle left ICU in Causeway Hospital after being on a ventilator for weeks.

"Our family was told at one point he was not going to survive this.

"During the time he was ventilated, the family welcomed his first Grandson Alexander into the world.

"We cannot find words to express our gratitude for the determination and dedication to the staff in Causeway Hospital, Coleraine."

Geoffrey is the proud owner of both the Hip Chip and the Codsway restaurants in Bushmills and his absence was recognised by the local community.

Laura described how the whole town clapped for him at 8pm on Wednesday night as the extended family including his 81-year-old Mum Lily and Dad James, 83, gathered together at the Hip Chip to show him their love.
