Watch as smiling Edinburgh coronavirus patient leaves intensive care in uplifting clip

During unprecedented times, an Edinburgh hospital has sought to lift spirits sharing an uplifting clip of a coronavirus survivor leaving intensive care.

The video follows the "amazing" patient as he is transferred to the Royal Infirmary's high dependency unit after spending over a week in critical care at the hospital.

NHS staff celebrated "happy days" with a standing ovation for Mr Mitchell who can be seen clapping and giving staff a thumbs up on his way out.

Sharing the video from the official critical care at Royal Infirmary Edinburgh, a spokesperson said: "Ten days within ICU and we are delighted to be able to move our amazing patient to HDU."

The clip has been shared thousands of times across social media, with an outpouring praise from Mr Mitchell's family for the hard-working NHS staff.

Eileen Mitchell said: "This is my husband Pete I can't thank you all enough for your care and attention.

"You're all miracle workers and my heroes."

"This is my papa, so unbelievably proud of him. So happy he's getting better, cannot thank the NHS enough for what they've done for him", said his grandaughter.

Elsewhere, countless others described the moment as "fabulous".

"This makes me emotional", said one.

The latest figure for confirmed cases of coronavirus in Edinburgh and the Lothians as of Monday was 932.

There are a further 58 in hospital, with 36 of those in intensive care.

Nicola Sturgeon also confirmed that  coronavirus lockdown restrictions are 'not likely' to be lifted  following the review due this week.
