Watch as revellers hit Newcastle city centre to enjoy first Friday night back inside bars

Revellers didn't let the rain dampen their spirits on the first Friday night since pubs were allowed customers back inside.

After restrictions eased on Monday, for many this was their first opportunity to enjoy a night out in Newcastle city centre.

The streets were bustling with pub-goers, and those who had planned ahead were armed with umbrellas and raincoats.

Many bars were fully booked and those accepting walk-ins had long queues.

Revellers at the Mile Castle had to queue for up to 90 minutes to get inside for a pint.

But Newcastle’s party atmosphere returned and many were in high spirits while they waited in the rain.

New rules in England mean that people no longer need to huddle in the cold outdoor areas and can sit inside as long as they are in groups no longer than six, or from two households.

Boris Johnson warned people to adopt a “heavy dose” of caution when enjoying the lockdown easing.

Cinemas, theatres, museums and concert halls are all able to reopen as well but there are restrictions on capacity.

People can also meet up at home in small gatherings and up to 30 can gather outdoors in England and Scotland.
