Watch as Portadown goalkeeper pulls off unbelievable save to win game

Matthew Tipton hailed Bobby Edwards' wonder save against Newry City on Friday night as "the best I have ever seen".

Edwards raced across his line to claw away a close-range header from Mark Hughes in the 78th minute to earn Portadown a 2-1 win at the Showgrounds.

It was a remarkable save that had some fans drawing comparisons with Gordon Banks' heroics against Pele at the 1970 World Cup.

Ports boss Tipton was equally as impressed.

"In my 25 years in football, that's the best save I have ever seen in a game I have been involved in," he told WeArePorts TV.

"I don't even think I've seen much better on TV.

"If that was in the Liverpool vs Man City game on Snday, it is save of the season.

"I thought it was a goal. It was a great cross and the fella was free in the six-yard box and I thought it was a goal. I don't know how he kept it out.

"And the difference is we have three points instead of just one. I have no words.

"If fans haven't been to the game, check it out on the highlights quickly."

Tipton admitted Edwards had started the game "poorly".

"He made that save, he collected crosses, he punched a couple and took he pressure off the defenders - all after starting poorly. Whether it was concentration, it was a bit icy," Tipton said.

"He had the wrong gloves on.

"He said 'don't you ever question what I do again'. I said I will question him if he makes mistakes, but told him to keep making those saves.

"We love him, and the boys are all over him again because he has won us the game."

Mark McCabe had given Newry City the lead with an 18th-minute penalty, but Portadown hit back with two second half goals from Adam Salley.

"It was a very scrappy game in the first half but I didn't think we did enough at times. There were things we had to do better, and we were a completely different team in the second half," Tipton said.

"We showed a little bit more belief and aggression in terms of wanting the ball and going to play."

Tipton also believes Friday night football is the way forward for his club.

Portadown agreed with Newry to hold their Championship fixture last night instead of the traditional Saturday 3pm kick-off.

"We like the Friday night games. As a football club they are better for us, in terms of the gates," he said.

"Both clubs have to agree, and we have a decent relationship with Newry and we have agreed we will go Fridays."

He added: "I think we take bigger crowds on Friday night, and I believe other clubs would benefit. Some clubs don't want to and they want to play at 3pm on a Saturday.

"But we are in the 21st century now and football doesn't have to be played at 3pm on a Saturday."
