Watch as Paul Gascoigne returns to the football field as he plays at Tottenham's new stadium

Paul Gascoigne returned to the football field as he played for Tottenham Legends to open the club’s new ground.

The ex-Newcastle man was hailed by fans of Tottenham as he stepped onto the Spurs’ stadium pitch.

Gascoigne came on for 15 minutes in the second half and received a standing ovation as he replaced Raphael van der Vaart in the new Spurs stadium. He was withdrawn a quarter of an hour into the match, which was set up to test the new stadium.

But it was Gascoigne’s most high-profile match for a decade and his friends and ex-teammates rallied round the former England and Newcastle man after he played for 15 minutes.

Tottenham posted footage of his rapturous welcome on social media.

Gazza’s close friend Shane Whitfield Tweeted afterwards that he was proud of his mate. He wrote: “So proud of you mate @Paul_Gascoigne8 2 years ago you wouldn’t of even turned up to this game just shows how far you come mentally xxxx”
