Watch pack of rats run around Slateford Green in Edinburgh as local speaks out over 'disgusting' infestation

A pack of rats has been captured running around in the Slateford area, as one local speaks out over a "disgusting" infestation.

It is understood that the mischief of rodents was spotted on Thursday evening at Slateford Green.

A least four rats can be seen running around the grass in the clip, while another brazen rat can be seen on top of a landfill bin.

Carol-Ann Blaikie shared the video to social media, writing: "First time in 24 years I've come across this!"

Dozens of locals responded to the post, with some residents reporting seeing an increasing number of rats in the area.

One man said: "There is loads down there now only last week an old lady was rigid with fear with then scurrying around her I have to chase them all off, there seems to be far more than normal.

"They have always been about with the railway and old railway path but I've seen loads more recently down there when walking my dogs and they have no fear now either."

"Passed earlier as well and was full of anxiety trying to detour around them...not bloody good.

"Hopefully something will be done, been reported by several tenants and I'm going to call council pest people in the morning. I told Aldi's staff as well as they're in car park as well", added another.

Maggie Banks, 64, lives in the Slateford Green complex, which is managed by Dunedin Canmore Housing Association, and said they first realised there was a problem back in December.

After throwing a stone at one of the overflowing bins in the area, she described "rats swarming everywhere". "They were going up the building and the trees, it was disgusting", she added.

Her daughter, who also lives in the complex, was even forced to leave her home for four days after it became infested with rodents shortly before Christmas.

The housing association sent in teams to clear the problem and discovered rodent faeces "everywhere" after dismantling the kitchen in a bid to find out how the rats were getting in.

Edinburgh Council's pest control team has since laid down traps and poison in the area but told Maggie they would survey the land to establish whether it is council-owned.

However, four weeks on and Maggie says there has been no progress, prompting her to get in touch with her local councillor, Catherine Fullerton.

Speaking to Edinburgh Live, she said: "They told them it would take one or two weeks to carry out the survey but that was four weeks ago."

Maggie explains that overflowing bins is an issue in the area, which is nearby a McDonald's and is connected to Aldi's car park by a pathway.

She added that she frequently has to ask council refuse workers to shut the lid on the bins after they have been emptied.

Describing one incident, she said: "A neighbour had to go back into Aldi the other night and ask somebody to walk her up the hill because there were hundreds of rats running about the place.

"She was terrified and crying and said she couldn't physically walk up the hill."

"Every night you go down there and there all there, they're everywhere", she addded.

A council spokesperson said: "We are aware of the issues in the Slateford Green area and our pest control teams have been out putting in place measures to deal with the problem."
