Video shows man hurling beer barrel through the front of Barclays Bank in Wigan town centre

A man has been arrested after a beer barrel was hurled through the window of a bank in Wigan town centre.

Police were called to Barclays on Market Place just before 4.50pm on Friday to reports of criminal damage.

Footage posted on social media shows a man walking up to the front of the building and throwing a metal barrel at the glass door.

He then walks through the shattered glass into the bank and appears to be shouting at someone before smoke - believed to be a security measure - starts to fill the bank.

Witnesses say the man tried to smash the door a few times before he was eventually successful.

Police say he was detained by members of the public before being arrested by officers.

The scene remained taped off on Friday night while investigation work was carried out.
