Watch as lying arsonist tells police officers how he fought off flames after starting fire

This is the moment where an arsonist told police officers he tried to rescue his neighbour from a fire he had started.

The videos show Barnett speaking to officers about how he heard his neighbour screaming after a fire broke out in a flat on Whitehall Terrace in Sunderland.

He claimed to officers that he went back into the flat to rescue his neighbour.

He said: "I could see flames the whole way up the stairs and I could hear her screaming. I ran back into my house and I put these pants on because I knew they were fire resistant.

"I grabbed a quilt, put the quilt over us and I ran to the top of the stairs. I was shouting 'Where are you?', she kept shouting 'in here' but I couldn't see and started running down the stairs."

Robert Barnett was seen running into the fire in what he claimed was an attempt to save his neighbour living above (Northumbria Police)

However, CCTV footage shows Barnett leaving the rear gate of his property and entering his neighbour’s upstairs flat before the blaze broke out.

The neighbour suffered injuries to her spine after jumping from a top-floor window.

The 30-year-old initially refuted his involvement and insisted he was just trying to help his neighbour, but this week admitted arson being reckless as to whether life is endangered.

Robert Barnett pleaded guilty to arson being reckless as to whether life is endangered when he appeared at Newcastle Crown Court on Tuesday, April 13.

He will be sentenced at Newcastle Crown Court on July 12.
