KING Charles has been confronted by members of the public while at an event in Newmarket over the cost of the royal family on UK taxpayers.
Charles was seen on video being asked why his “family costs half a million pounds a year” while he was out meeting the public on the street.
The King, who appeared to be taken aback by the comments, seemed to reply “ah yes” before walking off.
He was then asked why he only pays his Highgrove gardeners minimum wage when he receives an income of more than £27 million a year.
Charles was also asked if he thought it was fair for the public to pay him £27m a year from the Duchy of Lancaster.
Speaking for the anti-monarchy group, Republic, Graham Smith reacted to Charles being confronted, saying the root of peoples unhappiness with the royal family is due to their "dishonesty" about who owns the Duchies.
He said: "Lots of people are unhappy with the way the royals are funded. Most people think they cost too much.
"When so many people are struggling with the cost of living, knowing that we pay Charles £27m from Duchy funds and that he pays minimum wage to some of his staff is too much to stomach.
"The root of the problem is the dishonesty of the palace about who owns the Duchies. They are public assets, not private estates.
"With news over the weekend about Highgrove gardeners being paid minimum wage by the billionaire Charles it's hardly surprising we're seeing more grassroots reaction to his visits."
