Watch as heavy snow blankets Co Donegal forcing schools to close and leaving hundreds without power

Schools have been closed and hundreds have been left without power as Co Donegal was blanketed in snow overnight.

Donegal's Education and Training Board confirmed this morning that Deele College, Errigal College Letterkenny and Coláiste Ailigh are all closed as a result of the snow.

The organisation wrote on Twitter that all three schools are closed "due to adverse weather conditions".

Loreto Secondary School, Scoil Cholmcille, St Eunan's College and Lurgybrack NS in Letterkenny also announced that they were closed for the day.

Meanwhile hundreds have been left without power in Donegal and throughout the north-west of the country.

Faults have been reported in Donegal town and Ballyshannon, with power not expected to be restored until 10am.

A fault in Newtowncunningham will not be restored until 11am at the earliest, while a fault in Moville will see power down until at least 11.45.

A full list of power outages can be found on the ESB's website HERE.

It comes after Met Eireann warned of "very cold and unsettled" weather ahead this week with wintry showers of sleet and hail and even a risk of snow on higher ground.

Temperatures will be "below normal", remaining in single figures for most of the week.

The national forecaster also revealed we'll see some chilly nights with "sharp or severe frosts" and lows of -1C.

And melting snow is set to cause flooding in parts of the country on Monday as the wintry weather continues.

Further snow and wintry showers are also expected, particularly in Ulster and Connacht.
